The first restaurant lobby remained open during the four years of construction adding a new dining area in the original ground level theater setting with a new cocktail lounge and dining area called the “garden room.” The last of the construction was the building of the new ballroom which had a separate entrance depicting the same elegance of spiral staircases and crystal chandeliers throughout the first spiral to the sky room which adjoined the new theater and new ballroom.
The second-floor theater joined by the first restaurant’s second floor Sky Room. A dramatic, plush, thick, red-carpeted spiral staircase lead to the second-floor lobby of the new Drury Lane structure along with a new Star apartment and adjoining new DeSantis apartment. New construction was started by the early 1960’s, bringing a new cocktail lounge, transformed the original Drury Lane Theatre from the ground floor of the Martinique building into its own structure with a new Theatre which guests entered by a separate Italian marble entrance and foyer with the new box office on the main floor. With a planned expansion my father, Paul Akerlund Sr., rejoined his former assistant manager by 1959 then becoming a co-manager and Mr. My entry was in 1960 into the new Martinique located in Evergreen Park Illinois at 95th./ Western with Mr.

This relationship leading into their professional endeavors in opening Chicago night clubs on the south side of Chicago. Tony DeSantis was a musician playing trumpet with my father, Paul Akerlund Sr. Tony DeSantis and my father were involved in previous night clubs named The Embassy Club and the Macombo Club both on the south side of Chicago in the nineteen forties employing singers such as Patty Page and Peggie Lee.
